The Cisco 10000-SIP-600 is a SPA Interface Processor-600 (SIP-600), a carrier card for the Cisco 10000 Series edge router that provides the slots and backplane connectivity for Shared Port Adapters (SPAs), the modular interface cards that carry the router’s actual Ethernet, ATM, POS or serial WAN ports. The SIP itself carries no external ports; it is the intermediary between the chassis backplane and up to two or three SPAs (depending on SPA size) fitted into it, aggregating their traffic up to the route processor at up to 6 Gbps of processing capacity, which the “600” in the product name reflects. The Cisco 10000 Series was a widely deployed broadband and Metro Ethernet edge aggregation router for service providers through the 2000s and 2010s, and a working SIP is required before any SPA fitted to it can pass traffic.
