The D-Link DEM-421XT is a 10GBASE-SR XFP transceiver operating at 850nm over multimode fibre, rated to 300 metres on OM3 cable. It is a hot-pluggable optical module with an LC duplex connector that seats in the XFP cage of a D-Link switch and provides one 10 Gigabit Ethernet port. Short-reach 850nm optics are the standard choice for in-rack and intra-data-centre links, where the distance is short enough that multimode fibre is more economical than single-mode and the shorter wavelength allows a cheaper VCSEL source. Actual reach depends on the fibre grade in use, with OM1 and OM2 cable supporting materially shorter runs than OM3. The module fits D-Link chassis and stackable switches carrying XFP slots, including the DGS and DXS series.
