The HP J4858B is a ProCurve Gigabit SX LC Mini-GBIC, a 1000Base-SX transceiver with an LC duplex connector for multimode fibre runs up to around 550 metres, functionally the same short-reach optical transceiver as the later J4858C revision and fitting the same mini-GBIC slots on ProCurve GL, XL and zl-series switches and modules. It is intended for building or campus-level fibre links rather than long-haul spans, commonly used for switch-to-switch uplinks or fibre-attached servers within a single site. This is the correct spare for restoring a failed Gigabit fibre uplink or for adding a fibre port to an existing multimode installation. Specifiers should confirm their fibre type (multimode, not single-mode) and link distance before ordering, since an SX transceiver will not close a single-mode long-haul span.
