The HP J8712A is an 875W AC power supply built for the ProCurve Switch 5400zl series chassis switches (5406zl, 5412zl and related zl-family platforms), supplying the DC power the chassis backplane and installed modules need to run at full capacity. The 5400zl range takes one or more of these hot-swappable supplies depending on how many modules are populated and whether the chassis needs power redundancy, and a failed or missing unit typically shows as reduced switching capacity or loss of redundancy rather than a full outage, since the chassis continues to run on any remaining supplies. Genuine HP 875W supplies of this type are matched to the zl chassis backplane and are not interchangeable with the lower-wattage supplies used in HP’s smaller vl-series switches.
