It presents a 140 Mbit/s PDH or 155 Mbit/s STM-1 tributary circuit into the shelf, with the dual issue marking indicating compatibility across two hardware revisions within the Series 3.1 generation.

Marconi’s SMA family, inherited from GPT and Plessey, is a subrack of plug-in units: line termination units at 2, 34, 45 and 140/155 Mbit/s, optical STM interfaces, a system controller, alarm cards and power feeds. Marconi’s 2006 collapse ended factory support, so every SMA site still in service is maintained from secondary-market spares.
