The NEC X1831A1 is a revision of NEC’s X1831A demultiplexer unit for NEC’s FOTS (Fiber Optic Transmission System) FD-1840-series optical transmission platform, part of NEC’s FOTS (Fiber Optic Transmission System) FD-1840-series optical transmission platform, SDH/PDH-generation fibre-optic transmission equipment used to multiplex and carry voice, data and alarm signalling over optical fibre links. A terminal is built from multiplexer, demultiplexer, channel, alarm and power units in a common card-cage shelf, and units are matched to the specific shelf generation and release they were built for.

NEC’s own X1831A demultiplexer is the receiving counterpart of the FOTS multiplexer unit: it takes the aggregate signal arriving on the fibre and separates it back into the individual tributary channels for the channel units behind it. The X1831A1 shares the base part number with an added revision suffix, the convention NEC used to mark build issues within the same card slot and function; issues are not always interchangeable within one shelf, so the exact revision should be matched to the shelf it is replacing.
