The IBM 12R8278 is a FICON Express channel card, shortwave (SX) optics, quad-port, feature QD8A, for an IBM zSeries mainframe. It is in the same family as 12R7900, a FICON_3-generation card. FICON, IBM’s Fibre Connection protocol, provides the high-speed channel connectivity between a mainframe and its attached storage subsystems, and shortwave optics support the shorter-reach fibre runs typical within a single data centre.
