The IBM 12R7900 is a FICON channel card of the FICON_3 generation. FICON, short for Fibre Connection, is the fibre channel based protocol IBM mainframes use to reach their storage. A FICON feature installs in an I/O drawer or cage and provides the ports that connect the machine to a director or directly to a storage frame. Generations differ in link speed and in the machines that support them, so match the machine type and feature before ordering.

System z mainframes and the largest Power servers are still running production workloads in banking, insurance, government and manufacturing.
