The IBM 78P1718 is an 8Gb Fibre Channel 8GBase-LW SFP+ transceiver, running at 1310nm over single-mode fibre with an LC connector for a 10km reach, used on IBM Storwize V3700 and V7000 storage systems. It fits a Fibre Channel host port on the Storwize controller or SAN switch, extending fabric connectivity over single-mode fibre where the standard short-wave optics do not reach far enough.

A wavelength or reach mismatch between the two ends of a fibre run will not link up even though the connector looks correct, and 8Gb LW optics are not interchangeable with shorter-reach SW modules. Tech-Star, based in the UK and shipping worldwide, supplies IBM storage and network optics.
