The HP A7984A is an HP StorageWorks 4/8 Base SAN Switch, an entry-level 4Gb Fibre Channel fabric switch offering 8 ports for small SAN deployments, part of the same Brocade-built B-series SAN switch family as HP’s larger 4/16 and 4/32 models. The Base designation marks the switch’s starting port-license configuration; HP’s 4/8-4/32 family shares a common hardware platform across the range, with the higher-numbered models offering more physical ports and, on some variants, upgradeable port licensing rather than fundamentally different switch hardware. It provides redundant power and cooling and standard Fibre Channel fabric services (zoning, name server, fabric-wide services) for connecting a handful of hosts and storage arrays into a single fabric. As with the rest of the B-series family, it remains in service wherever the surrounding storage estate is still Fibre Channel.
