The RAD FOM-40 is a high-speed fiber optic modem that converts a synchronous data circuit for transmission over fiber. It supports selectable data rates from 56 kbps up to 2.048 Mbps, covering standard leased-line and E1/T1-class speeds on a single fiber pair.

It works over single-mode or multimode fiber using 850nm/1310nm LED or 1310nm/1550nm laser optics, with a single-mode/1550nm link reaching up to 100 km. On the electrical side it supports common DTE interfaces including V.24/RS-232, V.35, X.21, RS-530 and V.36 (RS-449), plus G.703 co-directional. Front-panel V.54 loopback switches allow local and remote diagnostics without extra test gear.

This makes the FOM-40 a straightforward way to extend a synchronous data link over fiber where copper is impractical, and it is commonly found in legacy leased-line and WAN extension deployments.
