The Catalyst 6500 is Cisco’s long-running high-density campus core and data-centre chassis, taking a Supervisor Engine plus a mix of line cards, service modules and power supplies to build anything from a wiring-closet switch to a core routing/switching platform; the 6506 is the smaller 6-slot chassis size in the family, alongside the 3-, 4-, 9- and 13-slot variants. Because it ships bare, this is a rebuild or expansion component: a spare or replacement chassis for an existing 6500 deployment, or the starting point for assembling a system from a customer’s own supervisor, line cards, PSUs and fan tray. Confirm slot count and any enhanced (-E) chassis requirements against your Supervisor Engine and line card generation before ordering, since some newer Sup720/Sup2T-class cards need the enhanced chassis.
