The Cisco WS-X6704-10GE is a Catalyst 6500 4-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet line card, fabric-enabled for the switch’s central crossbar fabric on Sup720/Sup32-equipped chassis. Fabric-enabled line cards connect directly to the fabric backplane rather than sharing the older shared-bus architecture, giving each card dedicated, non-blocking bandwidth to the rest of the chassis. Four ports of 10GE aggregation capacity suit data centre uplink, core interconnect and high-bandwidth server-farm roles. Catalyst 6500 chassis of this generation remain widely deployed, and 10GE line cards are commonly held as spares given the disruption a core-uplink failure causes.
