Fabric-enabled line cards connect directly to the fabric backplane rather than sharing the older shared-bus architecture, giving each card dedicated, non-blocking bandwidth to the rest of the chassis. The copper RJ-45 port design suits access and distribution deployments where standard copper cabling to end devices or downstream switches is preferred over fibre. Catalyst 6500 chassis of this generation remain widely deployed, and 48-port line cards are among the most frequently replaced modules given their port density.
