The Cisco HWIC-1T is a single-port serial High-Speed WAN Interface Card (HWIC), providing one synchronous/asynchronous serial interface for connecting a Cisco Integrated Services Router to legacy WAN links such as leased lines, Frame Relay or X.25 circuits via an external CSU/DSU. It fits the HWIC slots common across the 1800, 1900, 2800, 2900, 3800 and 3900 Series ISR and ISR G2 platforms, and its smart-serial connector supports the full range of serial cable types Cisco ships for those interfaces via separate adapter cables. Serial WAN links of this kind have mostly given way to Ethernet-based WAN services, but a meaningful number of legacy circuits, industrial links and older branch connections still run over synchronous serial, and the HWIC-1T remains the standard way to add that capability to a modern ISR chassis.
