The Supervisor Engine is the control-plane and switching-fabric card for the 6000/6500 platform, running the switch’s IOS/CatOS software and, on this early Sup1A generation, integrating the Layer 2 forwarding engine on the card itself rather than requiring a separate fabric module. It was Cisco’s original supervisor option for the 6000/6500 chassis before the later Sup2/Sup720/Sup32 generations, and remains a working spare for chassis still running on that earlier hardware and software base rather than having been upgraded to a later supervisor.
