The HP AA978A is an HP StorageWorks SAN Switch 2/16V, an entry-level Fibre Channel fabric switch offering 16 auto-sensing 1/2Gb ports for building a small-to-mid-size storage area network with room to grow into a core-to-edge design. Like the rest of HP’s StorageWorks B-series SAN switch family, the 2/16V is built on Brocade fabric-switching technology and sold under HP’s own StorageWorks branding, a common OEM arrangement in HP’s storage line rather than an HP in-house design. It supports redundant power and cooling for uninterrupted fabric operation and can scale to a two-switch or, with licensing, four-switch fabric before a full SAN director becomes the better fit. SAN switches of this generation remain in service wherever the storage arrays and hosts behind them are still Fibre Channel rather than iSCSI or NVMe/TCP.
