The HP J8765A is a 24-port 10/100-TX switch module built for HP’s ProCurve Switch vl-series modular chassis platform (the 5300vl and 4200vl families), adding a block of autosensing Fast Ethernet ports to a vl chassis alongside whatever gigabit or fibre modules are already installed. The vl series predates the later zl generation and uses its own module form factor, so this card is not interchangeable with 5400zl/8200zl modules despite the similar naming. It is typically used to expand desktop or access-layer port density on an existing vl chassis, or to replace a failed module without having to re-provision the whole switch. HP supported the vl platform for a long service life, and used modules like this remain in demand for keeping existing vl deployments at full port count.
