The HP C5686C is a StorageWorks DAT-40 internal tape drive, an HP DDS-4-generation DAT tape drive giving 20GB native / 40GB compressed capacity per cartridge, fitted for internal mounting in a server or tape autoloader bay. DAT-40 drives were HP’s standard entry-level backup tape format through the early-to-mid 2000s, used for direct server backup or as the drive mechanism inside small tape autoloaders and libraries, and remain in service at sites still running legacy DDS-format backup workflows or needing to read archived DDS-4 media. As an internal drive it connects via SCSI to the host server or library controller rather than standing alone, so a compatible SCSI interface and driver support on the host system is needed before fitting it.
