The Symbol AP-5131 is a standalone 802.11a/b/g access point, and the Symbol AP-5131-40006-WR is one of the radio and regulatory builds of it. Unlike the thin AP 300 access ports that depend on a wireless switch, the AP-5131 holds its own configuration and can run a small site on its own, with an onboard firewall, VPN termination and DHCP so a branch office or a single warehouse needs no separate controller.

It serves 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g clients at up to 54 Mbit/s across the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands and takes power over Ethernet, which is what made it a common choice for ceiling and rafter mounting. Symbol Technologies was bought by Motorola in 2007, the wireless LAN portfolio went on to Zebra in 2014, and it reached Extreme Networks in 2016.
