The IBM 53P4802 is the IBM 2778 PCI Ultra2 SCSI RAID Disk Unit Controller, a 68-pin SCSI-3 card fitted with cache memory and a battery backup unit, used in AS/400 and early iSeries system units and expansion towers such as the 5065 PCI Storage Expansion Tower and 5066 I/O Tower. The 2778 provides RAID-5 protection and compression across the internal disk units it controls, supporting up to 15 drives in as many as three arrays, with a minimum of four same-capacity drives required for a valid RAID-5 set. The card’s 44L0313 cache battery is a routine wear item that needs periodic replacement to keep the controller’s write-cache protection effective.
