IBM 85Y5850: ESM controller/expansion canister for Storwize V7000 (212/224).

The IBM 85Y5850 is an ESM (Enclosure Services Manager) controller module, also known as an expansion canister, for the IBM Storwize V7000 disk expansion enclosures, specifically the 2076-212 and 2076-224 models. Fitted into the rear of a V7000 expansion enclosure, the ESM canister provides the SAS connectivity and enclosure management functions that let the expansion chassis’s disk drives be seen and managed by the V7000 control enclosure, and V7000 expansion units are normally fitted with two ESM canisters for redundancy.

Storwize V7000 deployments remain widely in service across mid-range enterprise storage estates, and a genuine ESM canister is the standard way to restore full redundancy after a canister failure without disrupting the drives already installed in the enclosure.
