The Cisco AX-BNM-155 is a Broadband Network Module (BNM) with one SONET/SDH OC-3 (155Mbps) port, for the AXIS shelf in Cisco’s BPX/AXIS broadband ATM switching platform. The BNM provides the shelf’s uplink into the wider BPX network, and every AXIS shelf needs at least one BNM fitted (with a second supported for redundancy), making it a required rather than optional component in this class of deployment. The 155Mbps SONET/SDH variant suited OC-3-rate trunk connections between the AXIS shelf and the BPX broadband switch. This class of ATM/broadband switching hardware is now legacy and largely retired from production carrier use, but still turns up in service-provider environments keeping older BPX/AXIS platforms running, and in lab or training environments.
