The Supervisor Engine is the control-plane and switching-fabric card for the 4000/4500 platform, and the Supervisor II generation was Cisco’s mid-life upgrade over the original Supervisor I, adding improved switching performance and software feature support while keeping the same chassis form factor. It fits the earlier Catalyst 4000-family chassis (4003/4006) as well as compatible 4500-series chassis running the matching software train. This is a common spare for restoring or upgrading an existing 4000/4500 deployment where the supervisor has failed or where additional switching capacity is needed without a full chassis replacement.
