The Cisco NM-NAM is a Network Analysis Module, a network-module-format traffic monitoring card that fits directly into a modular Cisco access or branch router to provide RMON, RMON2 and extended MIB-based visibility into the traffic passing through it. It gives Layer 2 through Layer 7 insight for remote troubleshooting, application performance monitoring and capacity planning, and includes the NAM Traffic Analyzer, a browser-based interface for viewing RMON1, RMON2, DSMON and voice-monitoring statistics without needing separate monitoring hardware elsewhere on the network. Only one NM-NAM can be installed in a router at a time, and it requires a Cisco IOS release from the mid-2000s or later along with a compatible NAM software release to function. It suited branch and access router deployments where dedicated monitoring appliances were not justified, giving network staff visibility at the router itself rather than only at a central aggregation point.
