The Cisco RSP4 is a Route Switch Processor for the 7500 series router. The RSP is the heart of a 7500 chassis: it holds the routing engine, the system and packet memory, the console and auxiliary ports and the switching path between the Versatile Interface Processors in the other slots. A 7500 will not run without one, and larger installations fitted two for redundancy. Memory fitted to an RSP is what usually decides which software images it can run.

The Cisco 7500 series was the company’s high end enterprise and service provider router of the 1990s, built around a Route Switch Processor and Versatile Interface Processors carrying the port adapters. The RSP holds the routing engine, the system memory and the switching path between interface processors, so it is the part that defines what the chassis can do. These routers are long retired from mainstream networks but persist in specialist and industrial installations.
