The Cisco NM-CIDS-K9 is a Cisco Intrusion Detection System network module, fitted to the Cisco 2600, 3600 and 3700 series routers to add inline traffic inspection directly into the router chassis rather than requiring a separate standalone IDS appliance. It performs stateful pattern-matching and anomaly detection against traffic passing through the router, flagging or, depending on configuration, blocking suspicious activity at the branch-office edge. Throughput varies with the host router – lower on a 2600XM-class chassis, higher on a 3700-series router with more processing headroom – so the module’s effective capacity depends on which platform it is fitted to.
