The Cisco WS-C2828-A is a Catalyst 2820 Series modular Ethernet switch, providing 24 fixed 10BaseT ports plus two expansion slots and an 8K-entry MAC address table. The Catalyst 2820/2828 predates the later 1900 and 2900XL fixed-configuration switch families, and was aimed at dedicated 10Mbps connectivity for workgroups, servers and individual high-performance users where a shared-media hub could no longer keep up, with the two expansion slots allowing a fibre, additional copper, or FDDI module to be fitted for the backbone connection. It supported SNMP and RMON for remote management alongside basic port and link-status indicators. This class of switch is now well past its normal service life but still appears in legacy 10 Mbps segments, older lab networks and equipment being kept running for compatibility reasons.
