The Cisco WS-F6K-MSFC3 is a Multilayer Switch Feature Card 3 (MSFC3), a daughter card that mounts directly onto a Supervisor Engine 720 in a Catalyst 6500 or 6000 series switch chassis. The MSFC3 provides the Layer 3 routing intelligence for the switch, building the CEF forwarding table and downloading it to the Policy Feature Card 3 and any Distributed Feature Cards for hardware-accelerated forwarding, while the Supervisor Engine 720 itself handles chassis and fabric management. It is not a standalone module and only functions fitted to a compatible Supervisor Engine 720 (WS-SUP720, -3B or -3BXL variants). This is a common spare for restoring full Layer 3 routing capability on an existing Catalyst 6500/6000 supervisor after a card failure.
