The Extreme Networks 50017 is a BlackDiamond MSM-3, a third-generation Management Switch Module for the BlackDiamond 6800 series modular chassis switch. It provides the management processing and control-plane functions for the chassis, coordinating the line cards installed in the other slots.

The MSM-3 supports hitless failover between a redundant pair of modules, allowing the chassis to continue forwarding traffic without interruption if the active management module fails or is replaced. This makes it suited to core deployments where uptime is critical.
