The HP AM871A is a StorageWorks 8/80 SAN Switch, an 8Gb Fibre Channel director-class fabric switch built on Brocade’s OEM’d hardware, supplied here with dual AC power supplies and the First Ports on Demand licence for an additional 16-port upgrade, plus the Fabric, Enhanced Group Management and 8Gig FC licences. The Ports on Demand model lets a site activate additional physical ports on the same chassis via licence rather than a hardware upgrade, so the licensing that ships with a given unit directly affects how many of its ports are usable out of the box. The 8/80 sits toward the higher end of HP’s StorageWorks Brocade-OEM SAN switch range, aimed at larger Fibre Channel fabrics needing 8Gb speed and higher port density than the smaller 4/32-class switches.
