The HP J8705a is a ProCurve Switch 5400zl module offering 20 ports of 10/100/1000Base-T plus 4 mini-GBIC uplink slots, built for HP’s 5400zl chassis series to add a block of copper Gigabit access ports with flexible fibre or copper uplink options to a populated chassis. The 20+4 port split (rather than a straight 24-port module) reserves four of the module’s ports specifically for mini-GBIC transceivers such as HP’s Gigabit-SX, -LX, -LH or copper mini-GBICs, letting a single module serve both desktop access and local uplink duties. It occupies one module bay in a 5400zl chassis alongside whatever other access or uplink modules are fitted. As 5400zl deployments remain in service well past their original sale date, a spare module of this kind is a routine requirement for restoring or expanding port capacity.
