A wavelength conversion unit is the transponder in a WDM system. It accepts a client signal at a standard wavelength, in this case a 10 Gbit/s STM-64 SDH tributary, and retransmits it on a precise ITU grid wavelength that the multiplexer can combine with thirty-nine or seventy-nine others. Making the output tunable removes the need to stock a separate board for every channel, which is a significant practical saving on a large system, and the AFEC coding buys extra optical signal-to-noise margin so the span can run further before regeneration.
