The Cisco WS-C4506 is a Catalyst 4500-series 6-slot chassis, supplied with its fan tray but without a power supply or supervisor engine fitted, ready to be configured to the buyer’s requirements. The Catalyst 4500 family is Cisco’s modular campus and data-centre switching platform sitting between the fixed-configuration Catalyst switches and the larger Catalyst 6500 chassis.

The 6-slot 4506 variant is one of the mid-size options in the range, accepting a choice of supervisor engines and line cards to build out the required port density and feature set. Buying the bare chassis lets an engineer specify exactly the supervisor, power supply and line-card combination needed rather than inheriting a fixed configuration.
