The Cisco WS-X6K-SUP1-2GE is a Supervisor Engine 1 for the Catalyst 6000 and 6500 series with two GBIC based Gigabit Ethernet uplink ports. The supervisor holds the switching engine, the console access and the system software for the whole chassis, and the uplinks on it are usually how the switch connects upstream. Supervisor generation determines which line cards and which software a chassis can run, so this is the part that sets the capability of the whole system.

The Catalyst 6500 was Cisco’s modular campus and data centre switch for well over a decade, and its chassis is filled by a supervisor engine plus line cards chosen for the port types the site needs. Copper and fibre Ethernet modules, service modules and redundant supervisors all share the same backplane, and slot for slot the platform was designed to be upgraded rather than replaced. That longevity is why 6500 line cards are still a live maintenance item.
