The Comtech SDM-300A is a satellite modem operating at a 70MHz IF with QPSK modulation and Viterbi forward error correction, and is compliant with the IESS-308, IESS-309 and IESS-310 Intelsat interface standards, making it suitable for standardised SCPC links into Intelsat and equivalent satellite networks. As an updated variant within Comtech’s SDM series, it sits in the earth station RF chain between the baseband/data interface and the upconverter, providing the modulated 70MHz IF signal for transmission and demodulating the received IF from the downconverter. IESS-compliant modems of this type were widely used for leased-line and point-to-point satellite data circuits by carriers, government users and enterprise VSAT operators.
