Enterasys ER16-CM4-256: X-Pedition ER16 CM4 control module with 256MB, a 10/100 port and two PC Card slots.

The Enterasys ER16-CM4-256 is the CM4 control module for the X-Pedition ER16 switch router, fitted with 256MB of memory, one 10/100BASE-TX port and two PC Card slots.

The control module is the brain of the chassis: it holds the routing protocol software, builds the tables the line cards forward against, and provides the console and management interfaces. The PC Card slots take flash cards for the software image and configuration, which is how these were upgraded and recovered in the field. The ER16 is a 16 slot platform designed with redundant power, switch fabric and control modules, so a second CM4 gives a standby that takes over on failure. Match the memory size across a redundant pair.

The X-Pedition line came through Cabletron Systems to Enterasys Networks in 2001 and to Extreme Networks in 2013.
