The Marconi 1HAT60845AEL is a system controller. In a Marconi SDH shelf the system controller holds the node’s control processing, its alarm handling and the management path a technician or a network management system uses to reach it, so it is the card that turns a shelf of interfaces into a managed node. The 1HAT prefix covers the plug-in unit families in this range and the trailing letters mark the build issue.

Marconi’s SMA range, inherited from GPT and Plessey, was the SDH multiplexer family that carried a large share of the UK network through the 1990s and beyond. An SMA node is a subrack of plug-in units: line termination units at 2, 34, 45 and 140 or 155 Mbit/s, optical STM-1 and STM-16 interfaces, a system controller, alarm and management cards and the power feeds. Marconi’s collapse in 2006 ended factory support, so every remaining site runs on secondary market stock.
