The Enterasys 7GR4270-12 is a Matrix DFE-Diamond line card carrying twelve 1000Base-X ports, each taking a Mini-GBIC transceiver, and it fits the Enterasys Matrix N-Series chassis. Populating the ports with Mini-GBICs rather than fixing the media at the factory is what makes the card useful across a mixed site: the same card can terminate short multimode runs within a building and longer single-mode runs between them, decided per port at the time of install. The DFE family put the forwarding engine on the line card itself, so adding a card added switching capacity rather than only ports. Enterasys was acquired by Extreme Networks in 2013 and the Matrix line is long out of production, which makes a refurbished card the practical way to add or replace Gigabit fibre density in an installed chassis.
