The Cabletron EPIM-F2 is an Ethernet Port Interface Module providing a 10Base-FL multimode fibre connection with ST connectors. EPIMs are removable media adapters that let a single chassis port be presented as whichever physical medium the run requires, so the same switch or repeater port can serve twisted pair, thick or thin coaxial, or fibre simply by fitting the matching module.

The F2 is the multimode fibre variant, used where a segment crosses between buildings, passes through electrically noisy plant, or exceeds the distance copper allows, since optical cable carries no ground reference and is immune to induced interference. It operates at 10Mbps and is compatible with both 10Base-FL and the earlier FOIRL specification, which matters when connecting to older fibre repeaters.

The EPIM design is Cabletron Systems’ own; the line passed to Enterasys in 2001 and to Extreme Networks in 2013. Tech-Star, UK-based and shipping worldwide, supplies interface modules for legacy network maintenance.
