The Cabletron SSR-CM2-64 is a control module for the SmartSwitch Router 8000 and 8600 chassis, fitted with 64 MB of memory. The control module is the brain of the shelf: it holds the routing software, builds the forwarding tables the line cards use, and provides the console and management interfaces, so a chassis will not pass routed traffic without one.

Memory size is the practical difference between control module variants, because it caps the routing table the shelf can hold, which is what decides whether a unit suits an edge role or a larger core deployment. The SmartSwitch Router line was later sold as the X-Pedition, a rename rather than a change of owner. Cabletron Systems became Enterasys for enterprise products in 2001, and Extreme Networks took over the portfolio in 2013. Tech-Star holds this line in the UK and ships internationally.
