The Cabletron TPT-2 is an IEEE 802.3 twisted-pair transceiver, a compact external MAU that gives an AUI-equipped Ethernet device a 10BASE-T RJ-45 connection over 100 ohm cable. It fixes directly to the AUI port on a host device, or sits at the end of an AUI drop cable where the host is awkwardly placed, and needs no configuration and no separate power feed. The unit carries Cabletron’s LANVIEW status indicators, so link and activity state can be read at the transceiver itself rather than only at the hub, and it includes a self-correcting receive-pair feature that keeps the link up where the RJ-45 pairs have been wired the wrong way round. External transceivers of this type were standard equipment during the move from thick and thin coaxial Ethernet to structured twisted-pair cabling, and they remain the practical way to put an AUI-only device onto a modern copper segment. Cabletron Systems restructured in 2001, with its enterprise business continuing as Enterasys Networks; Extreme Networks bought Enterasys in 2013.
