The Cabletron 9E423-36 is a 36 port Ethernet switching module for the MMAC-Plus and SmartSwitch 9000 chassis, presenting its ports on three RJ-71 telco connectors rather than individual RJ45 sockets. A telco connector carries twelve ports on one plug, which is how the card reaches 36 ports in a single slot; the trade off is that it terminates on a patch panel or an octopus harness rather than taking station cables directly.

The module is fitted with the advanced services memory option, which is what enables the higher layer switching features on this generation rather than plain bridging. Ports run at 10 Mbit/s to the desktop. Cabletron Systems became Enterasys for enterprise products in 2001, and Extreme Networks took over the portfolio in 2013.
