The Cabletron SSR-PS-8 is a power supply module for the SmartSwitch Router 8000, the eight-slot chassis in Cabletron’s SmartSwitch Router range. It installs into a dedicated power bay in the chassis rather than into a line-card slot, feeding the switch fabric, the control processor and the installed interface modules. Where a chassis is fitted with more than one supply, a failed unit can be exchanged without dropping the routed traffic the chassis is carrying, so a spare is a routine holding for sites still running the platform. The SmartSwitch Router line was Cabletron’s wire-speed Layer 3 switching platform, aimed at campus cores and server-farm aggregation where routing had to keep pace with switching rather than becoming the bottleneck behind it. Cabletron became Enterasys Networks in 2001 for its enterprise products, and that business was absorbed by Extreme Networks in 2013.
