The Cabletron SSR-CM2 is a control module for the SmartSwitch Router chassis, the card that holds the routing software and management interfaces for the shelf. Line cards in an SSR chassis handle forwarding in hardware, but they work from tables the control module builds, so the chassis needs one fitted to route at all, and the module also carries the console port and the configuration store.

This is the base CM2 reference; variants of the same module were sold with different memory fits, and memory is what limits routing table size, so it is worth confirming which fit is on a given unit. The SmartSwitch Router range was later renamed X-Pedition without changing hands. Ownership ran from Cabletron Systems to Enterasys in 2001 and then to Extreme Networks, which bought Enterasys in 2013. Tech-Star is UK based and ships worldwide.
