The Enterasys 6H308-24 is a 24 port 100BASE-FX Fast Ethernet module for the SmartSwitch 6000 chassis, presenting its ports on MT-RJ connectors for multimode fibre.

MT-RJ is the reason the port count is what it is: the connector holds both fibres in a housing about the width of an RJ45, so a fibre module reached the same density as a copper one and fibre to the desk became a realistic proposition. The SmartSwitch 6000 is a modular chassis for backbone and wiring closet duty, and modules are hot swappable within it. Sites that ran fibre to the desk generally did so for electrical isolation or distance, neither of which goes away, so like for like spares remain the practical answer.

Cabletron Systems built the SmartSwitch 6000, Enterasys Networks carried it from 2001 and Extreme Networks acquired the business in 2013.
