The Cabletron HSIM-G09 is a single port Gigabit Ethernet high speed interface module, presenting 1000BASE-LX to IEEE 802.3z. HSIMs are the uplink expansion system on Cabletron switch modules and standalone units: a host card carries its own desktop ports and reserves one bay for an HSIM, so a Gigabit uplink can be added to an existing switch without changing the switch.

LX is the long wavelength optic and runs over single mode fibre for longer building to building distances as well as over multimode, which is the reason to choose it over the short wavelength SX variant. HSIMs are matched to the host generation, so it is worth confirming the host module before ordering.
