The Cabletron TRMMIM is a Token Ring management module in the MIM (Media Interface Module) form factor, providing SNMP management for Token Ring modules installed in a Cabletron MMAC Multi Media Access Center chassis. Rather than carrying station lobes itself, it gives the chassis an SNMP presence so that ring status, module state and error conditions can be polled and trapped by a network management station instead of being read from front-panel indicators on site. Management capability on the MMAC platform is supplied by a dedicated module of this kind, so a chassis without one keeps passing traffic but offers no remote visibility, which makes the management module a common field-replacement item on surviving installations. The MMAC chassis accepted Ethernet, Token Ring and FDDI modules together, and Token Ring interface modules of this generation ran at either 4 Mbps or 16 Mbps. The Cabletron enterprise line passed to Enterasys Networks in the 2001 restructuring and then to Extreme Networks, which acquired Enterasys in 2013.
