FOIRL fibre optic Ethernet media interface module for the MMAC modular hub.

The Cabletron FOMIM-12 is a fibre optic media interface module for the MMAC modular hub, running Ethernet to the FOIRL specification. FOIRL is the original 10 Mbit/s fibre link standard that preceded 10BASE-FL, and its purpose in an MMAC was to reach equipment twisted pair could not: between floors, across a site, or into areas where electrical isolation mattered more than bandwidth.

The module fits an MMAC chassis slot and takes power and backplane connectivity from the shelf. FOIRL ports will generally interoperate with 10BASE-FL equipment at 10 Mbit/s but the two standards differ in optical budget, so link distances should be checked rather than assumed. Cabletron Systems became Enterasys for enterprise products in 2001, and Extreme Networks took over the portfolio in 2013. Tech-Star holds this line in the UK and ships internationally.
