Gandalf

Gandalf Technologies was an Ottawa data communications company founded in 1971 and one of the better known Canadian names in the field through the 1980s and early 1990s. It built the equipment that connected terminals to host computers, short-haul modems, terminal servers and remote access hardware, and later the LAN interconnect products that carried that traffic between sites. The spread of TCP/IP networking pushed much of the range into a niche, and the company went bankrupt in August 1997, with its product business, intellectual property and the right to the Gandalf name bought by Mitel. Tech-Star supplies new and refurbished Gandalf hardware including data communications interface units. Refurbished Gandalf hardware remains in demand because nothing compatible has been manufactured for decades, so any remaining installation can only be kept running from existing stock.
